Ex-Military Case Study
Former RAF Engineer
“I was in the Royal Air Force for 10 years as an engineer before I joined Morrison Utility Services a year ago. I did many tours abroad in Afghanistan, Kenya, France, America and Oman. When I was thinking about my next step I came across Morrison Utility Services at a Career Transition Partnership workshop. Afterwards, I went home to find out more about the business by researching online and my impression was that they had so much to offer and really look after their people.
“I joined the company as a Smart Meter Engineer and did my Smart Metering dual fuel course at Eastleigh College. Not only was I getting paid to do the course, Morrison Utility Services paid for the course as well. Since then I have also received customer service training and I have a CSCS card enabling me enter building sites if I need to. I now also volunteer to speak at Career Transition Partnership events and have taken two inspirational talking courses to support this.
“I like the role I do now, I am really my own boss and it is expected that I will get on and do whatever is necessary to get the job done. I have got my own van, tools, tablet and work phone and my supervisors are just a phone call away if I need them. Being a former member of the Armed Services I think puts you at an advantage in civilian life. You get a lot of things instilled in you like the importance of punctuality and how you need to look after your own equipment. One of the biggest things for me about working for Morrison Utility Services though, is that you get asked to do something rather being told. There is a lot more respect. I find it so easy now to speak to people on all levels and I find I can adapt to any situation. I love my role but my goal is to move on up the chain”.
